Accidentally Put Diesel in a Petrol Car?
Car sputtering, blowing smoke, or stalled? Don’t keep trying to turn it over. Our mobile response team will drain the diesel and get you moving in under an hour.
What Happens When Diesel Gets into a Petrol Engine?
Petrol engines rely on spark plugs to ignite highly volatile petrol vapor.
Diesel fuel is much thicker, heavier, and less volatile—it needs high pressure and compression to ignite.
When you mix diesel into a petrol tank, the fuel injectors coat your spark plugs in heavy, unburnt oily residue.

If you start the engine, the car will usually run for a minute or two on the leftover petrol in the lines, then it will begin to cough, misfire, blow thick smoke from the exhaust, and completely stall.
Do not keep cranking the ignition to restart it.
Continuous cranking will simply flood the engine with diesel and completely foul your spark plugs.

Our 20-Minute Petrol Engine Recovery Plan
Draining diesel out of a petrol vehicle requires a thorough evacuation to ensure the engine sparks cleanly afterward.
Our local mobile technician will handle everything right where you are parked:

[1] Complete Extraction ──► Heavy-duty suction pumps pull all contaminated fuel out of your tank.
[2] Line Flush ──► We purge the fuel lines to push out any lingering thick diesel oil.
[3] Spark Plug Check ──► If you drove the car, we check and clean the fouled spark plugs.
[4] Fresh Fuel Fill ──► We add fresh petrol to dilute any microscopic traces and prime the
The Good News: Your Engine Will Be Fine
If you are panicking that you’ve entirely ruined your engine, take a deep breath.
Unlike putting petrol in a diesel car (which destroys expensive mechanical pumps), diesel in a petrol car rarely causes permanent engine damage.
It is simply a major coating nuisance that blocks the ignition process.
Once Wrong Fuel Emergency drains the tank, flushes the lines, and introduces fresh unleaded petrol, your car will clear its throat and run as smoothly as it did before the mistake.

Q: What should I do if I just realized I put diesel in my petrol car?
-
A: If you are still at the pump, leave the engine off, push the car to a safe spot, and call us at 07771 029122. If you are already driving and the car starts chugging, safely pull over immediately and turn off the key.

Q: Do you need to replace parts after a diesel-in-petrol mistake?
-
A: In 95% of cases, no parts need to be replaced. Once the system is fully drained and flushed with fresh unleaded, the engine will burn off the remaining traces naturally. Occasionally, if a car has been driven heavily on diesel, the spark plugs may need a quick clean or swap, which our technicians can handle.

Q: Can I just top the tank up with petrol if it was only a little bit of diesel?
-
A: As a general rule, if diesel makes up more than 5% of your total fuel capacity, the engine will struggle or refuse to run. It is always safest to drain the tank entirely rather than risking being stranded in a dangerous location later in your journey.
